Tracing and debugging your AOPs

Top takeaways from this module:

  • Audit logs determine in the agent selected the correct AOP and tools
  • Trace view shows how an agent made decisions at each part of the conversation
  • Duet acts as an intelligent debugging partner to accelerate troubleshooting and fixes

Debugging lets you confirm your AOPs are working as intended, and troubleshoot quickly when they're not. Once you publish an AOP, the agent decides for itself what to load, when to call a tool, and when to switch AOPs, so understanding why it made a decision matters as much as seeing what it did. Three tools, used one after another, give you that visibility: Audit Logs, Trace View, and Duet.

Start with Audit Logs to check for routing issues. Audit Logs show whether the correct AOP was used for a given conversation, and whether any tool calls errored out.

If the correct AOP was selected, move to Trace View to check for AOP logic issues. Trace View shows the specific pathway your agent took through a conversation, which sections it opened, which tools it called, and any AOP switches along the way, along with the agent's own rationale for each step.

Once you have a few theories about what's going wrong, bring in Duet as a thought partner to identify the root cause and suggest fixes. Ask it a question about a conversation, and it analyzes the underlying logs, including AOP selection, tool calls, and model responses, to explain what happened and help you land on a fix.

Together, these tools make debugging approachable and actionable.
